The course is offered as a subject course.
The ongoing globalisation will require that all professionals are conversant with global health in varying circumstances such as when caring for patients coming from other parts of the world, when working with research in various forms and when expected to make professional contributions in discussions on global development.
Syfte
The aim of this course is to increase knowledge and awareness of global health challenges, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
Mål
- To increase the students awareness and understanding of health problems and health care in resource poor societies.
- To give the students an understanding of the complexities of global change and its effects on the health sector as well as an increased understanding of cultural issues.
Innehåll
The course is about global health issues and problems and covers:
- sexual and reproductive health and rights
- measurements of health in populations and of population growth
- health systems and economics
- review of the main determinants of health
- priorities for prevention and treatment of the most important diseases in children and adults globally
- infectious diseases such as Malaria, TB and other bacterial infections, HIV and other viral infections as well as parasites
- relation between diseases and poverty
- cultural encounters
Genomförande
The course is worth five Swedish credit points, corresponding to approximately 5 weeks of full time studies. The course consists of lectures, seminars and group work. The seminars are compulsory.
Examination
The course will be examined by an individual written examination. The following marks are used: fail, pass and pass with distinction. For international students the corresponding levels of the 7-graded ECTS scale are used.
Kursutvärdering
Apart from the final Internet-based evaluation at the end of the course, one oral evaluation will take place during the course. The student’s self-evaluation of his/her learning goals as well as an evaluation of objectives and content mentioned above will take place. The views of the students will be considered in the development of the course.
