Kristianstad was founded in 1614 by the Danish king Christian IV as a fortress town surrounded by water. The town layout is in the renaissance style that successfully combines the military requirements with the aesthetic such as in the magnificent Church of the Holy Trinity.

Nowadays there live around 70 000 inhabitants in Kristianstad. That it is often called the Town of Sculptures today is because of the large number of works or art that decorate the streets and squares. Kristianstad is a lively commercial centre. A network of rivers is ideal for canoeing and other water sports. The whole region offers ample opportunities for fishing as well as equestrian sports. Kristianstad's wetlands are situated just outside the town centre. This area is known for its rich bird life and attracts birdwatchers from all over Sweden.
