OMEP Sweden – what we do
OMEP Sweden was founded already in 1948 and we are proud to have provided two World Presidents – Alva Myrdal, 1948-1950, and Ingrid Pramling Samuelsson, 2008-2013. We have three regional chapters, in Gothenburg, Skåne and Stockholm and we work in projects and with seminars.
Here are some ongoing projects:
Within ES
Sustainability from the Start – the ERASMUS+ project
Swedish OMEP participates in the Erasmus+ project that aims to develop an online-based course for preschool staff on learning for sustainable development, and to universities and pre-school teacher students. Kristianstad University coordinates the project and other partners are OMEP in France, Ireland, Croatia and the Czech Republic and the educational company edChild.
Through the EU funding, the course is free for all participants. The course was launched in September, 2023, in Sweden, and will be presented at the conference in Keynote 3 and in a symposium.
The OMEP ESD Rating Scale
The Scale is of continued interest among EC educators. Contacts with the Swedish National Agency for Education have been very rewarding, organising joint webinars, and presenting a film about the Scale. Within the Ifous Sustainable preschool programme, most principals have organised for all their preschools to use the OMEP scale reaching >400 preschools.
Linked to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
Nappy free children earlier
The purpose of the OMEP Sweden campaign is to spread knowledge about and draw attention to the importance of early toilet training as the child’s right, for sustainability, and to save money for parents and preschools. During 2023, translations with the help of the Swedish Enures Academy have been translated to Arabic, English, Somali and Spanish. The information folders are in demand from childcare centres, family centers and preschools. Since the start in September 2022, around 20,000 leaflets have been distributed.
Children's health and well-being
OMEP Sweden has joined Sweden's Municipalities and Regions' project Power pooling for mental health and advocates for how cooperation regarding preschool children's health can be strengthened. A policy outline of Child Health 0–5 years has been developed.
Colour your Rights – the Convention in pictures
The OMEP Sweden Calendar 2023 and 2024
The OMEP calendar is designed to be used together with children in preschools. It aims to spread information about the Convention with links to the National Curriculum for the preschool, about OMEP, how the calendar can function as an educational tool and to draw attention to children globally. The aim of the project is combined with the OMEP project Colour your rights where children illustrate their perception of their rights or a particular article to arouse interest and increase knowledge about children's thoughts about the Convention.
Project: The National Book Fair
In 2023, OMEP Sweden participated in the largest book fair in Sweden, in Gothenburg. We informed about OMEP and our activities both nationally and internationally. WE talked and talked and distributed current information about OMEP. It was an excellent way to promote the organisation.
