VP OMEP in Europe welcome address
Dear advocates for children's rights and well-being, professionals,
and scholars, dear friends of OMEP!
Throughout the history of early childhood education, numerous professionals, academics, and organizations have made significant contributions to both the theory and practice of early childhood education. OMEP, has played a pivotal role in shaping the land-
scape of children's rights and well-being.
Founded in 1948, OMEP stands as the longest-standing organization, celebrating its 76th anniversary this year. It originated as a response to the aftermath of the Second World War, recognizing the imperative to safeguard the rights of children. Over the years, OMEP has evolved into the most comprehensive organization in its field, bringing together a diverse array of professionals, including educators, pedagogues, psychologists, doctors, academics, and creators of educational policies. This collective approach underscores the understanding that ensuring a child's well-being requires a multi-faceted perspective.
In Europe, where OMEP took root, there are currently 28 active national committees and 2 preparatory committee, making it the region with the highest number of national committees. The abundance of national committees reflects the richness and variety of activities carried out by OMEP members daily to comprehensively protect children's rights.
I am honoured to visit Sweden, recognized as the pioneer of sustainability in education, highlighting the pivotal role the country plays in advancing sustainable practices. While we celebrate the progress made, we are mindful that even in the current year, there is no corner of the globe where children's rights are not violated. Wars and crises continue to impact children's lives daily, emphasizing the ongoing need for collective advocacy.
As we gather for this conference, let us acknowledge the enduring role of OMEP in championing the rights of children. From its origins as a response to post-war challenges, OMEP has grown into a powerful force for change, advocating for the best interests of children worldwide.
I hope that this conference, much like OMEP itself, will contribute to a shared goal – ensuring a better, sustainable world for children.
