General information

The course is an elective method course of the Master Programme in Health Science and is also offered as a freestanding course. Form of study: Distance without meeting. Language of instruction: English.

A1N Second cycle, has only first-cycle course/s as entry requirements

Entry requirements










Result equivalent to 135 credits with at least 75 credits in Health Science or in Medicin, Humanities and Social Sciences with a scientific orientation in health sciences and English 6 or equivalent.

Aim

The course aims to enable students to develop specialised knowledge of qualitative research methods in the health sciences and practical skills in using the methods.

Content

The course deals with:

  • A hermeneutical research paradigm and its methods
  • Data collection and analysis in qualitative research
  • Credibility aspects of qualitative research

Intended learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, students shall be able to

  • 1. describe and discuss the typical features of a qualitative research approach
  • 2. explain and apply methods based on a research issue
  • 3. describe and discuss credibility aspects
Competence and skills
On completion of the course, students shall be able to
  • 4. carry out qualitative data collection
  • 5. process and analyse collected data with a relevant qualitative method  
  • 6. independently compile and present the results of a qualitative analysis
Judgement and approach
On completion of the course, students shall be able to
  • 7. critically reflect on ethical, sociocultural, and power and gender aspects of qualitative research
  • 8. critically discuss research methodology in relation to qualitative research

Implementation

Students should work independently on all elements of the course. The course requires students to have access to a computer with Internet connection and a headset.

Examination – tests and forms

Assessment 1 (1.5 credits) Qualitative research.
Written individual home exam. Learning outcomes 1 and 2 are assessed. Available grades: Fail and Pass.

Assessment 2 (4 credits) Qualitative data collection.
Qualitative data collection including analysis with a relevant method. Written individual home exam. Intended learning outcomes 2, 4-7 are examined. Grades awarded: Fail, Pass and Pass with Distinction

Assessment 3 (2 credits) Concepts of credibility and reflection.
Written individual home exam. Assessment of learning outcomes 3 and 8. Available grades: Fail and Pass.

Grades awarded: Fail, Pass and Pass with Distinction. For a grade of Pass on the whole course, this grade at least must have been awarded on all assessments. For a grade of Pass with Distinction, this grade must have been awarded on assessment 2.

Transitional rules

A student admitted in accordance with this syllabus is entitled to be assessed according to the terms set down in it one (1) year after it has ceased to apply, i. e. when it has been replaced by a new syllabus or the course has been discontinued. A student who has not passed the course within one year of the date when the syllabus ceased to apply can, within another two years and subject to approval by the examiner, be offered further examination opportunities in accordance with a course syllabus deemed very similar to that of the discontinued course. However, the examination opportunities offered must only involve a marginal increase in the resources used. Subsequently, the student can only receive a certificate of passed course components.
