Eligibility through recognition of prior learning
If you do not meet the general or specific entry requirements through formal qualifications, you can apply to have your eligibility evaluated based on your prior learning.
At Kristianstad University we can assess your prior learning and decide if that qualifies you for a programme and/or course. Examples of prior learning that knowledge and experiences can be gained from are:
- working life
- work in associations/volunteer work
- work and/or studies in other countries
- courses and training sessions, for example staff training
- military service
How to apply
- Apply for programmes and/or courses at universityadmissions.se no later than the application deadline
- Fill in the application form. Print and sign the form and then scan the signed form. Please note that the form is only available in Swedish. Apply for recognition of prior learning no later than the application deadline. Please note that applications received after the application deadline will not be processed.

Alternatively, you can send the form to the following address: PostNord Strålfors AB, Att: University Admissions in Sweden, SE-190 81 Rosersberg, Sweden. - Send an email to antagningen@hkr.se and let us know that you have applied for recognition of prior learning.
Supporting documentation
You need to provide evidence of the knowledge, skills and abilities you refer to. The prior learning assessment is based on the documents you submit and how you justify that you have the competence required to grant the qualification.
Please complete a personal letter where you in detail describe in what way you meet the general and/or specific entry requirements as outlined in the programme or course syllabus. The letter should include:
- what specific knowledge, skills or abilities you believe you have
- how you acquired the knowledge, skills and abilities
- in what way you believe that these make it possible for you to study the programme and/or course you have applied for
The following questions may help you when completing your letter:
- what specific knowledge, skills and abilities do you consider yourself to have in relation to the programme and/or course you are applying for?
- give examples and describe how you used your prior learning in the situations you have given examples of
- in what way do you believe your prior learning enables you to study the programme and/or course you are applying for
Please support your application with certificates and grades if applicable
- use employer certificates to demonstrate your prior learning. The certificate should state where you have worked, duration of employment, extent of employment (full-time/part-time) and your work tasks.
- use grades, certificates, presentations of completed projects or special assignments or letters from references who can certify your competence.
- Please ensure that you submit all documents with your application.
If you have previously applied for prior learning, the documentation is still available in our admission system. However, you must still submit a new application form with your application for prior learning. Each decision is made for a specific programme or course.

What happens next?
When we have received your application for recognition of prior learning, an initial assessment is first made to see if you already formally meet the entry requirements. If you do not meet the entry requirements, we would carry out an assessment based on the documentation and information you have provided. The purpose of the assessment is to see if your accumulated knowledge and experience is enough to be admitted to the programme and/or course you have applied to.
Decision and the right to appeal
The decision regarding prior learning will be stated on your admission letter, also called Notification of Selection Results. Each decision is made for a specific course or programme and the decision is only valid for the course or programme applied for and the current semester.
If your application is rejected, you have the right to appeal the decision within three weeks. The Notification of Selection Results letter will include information on how to appeal and more information can be found at University Admission’s website.
Take the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test
Even if you meet the entry requirements with your prior learning, you will not receive a merit rating. For many courses and programmes, there are more applicants than places available. Therefore, it is important to have a merit rating you can use to compete for these places. One way to get a merit rating for beginners (undergraduate level) is to complete the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (Högskoleprovet). Please note that the test is only given in Swedish.
