Studying with a disability

As a student you can apply for targeted pedagogical support in connection with your studies.

Please apply for targeted pedagogical support on www.nais.uhr.se

You have to verify your disability with a certificate stating that your disability is permanent or lasts a minimum of 6 months. Please download the certificate which has to be in English and signed for example by a doctor, a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

When Kristianstad university has received the certificate you will together with the university's coordinator for targeted pedagogical support discuss the support that may be required and the support the university can provide or recommend.

Exchange students

If you are going to study at Kristianstad University as an exchange student your university must confirm that they are willing to pay for the support you can receive here. Please note that your disability coordinator at your home university must contact us well before your arrival.

You should contact the disability coordinator and/or the international office at your home university regarding the possibility of applying for an extra ERASMUS grant to cover possible costs for support during the exchange.

The targeted pedagogical support is intended to compensate for difficulties that may arise in the study situation.

Please note that transport service, technical equipment, medical assistance or aids and assistance outside the university setting is the responsibility of the Social Welfare system in the municipality of your residence. Please contact the municipality before you apply to the University.

Independent students/Master's students

If you are an independent student, or a "free-mover", we do not need to have any contact with your previous university. Please contact us yourself to let us know that you are going to study at Kristianstad University. We ask you to apply for targeted pedagogical support when you apply to Kristianstad University. You do so at www.nais.uhr.se When you fill in the application form click on the flad in the right hand corner for English.

The University's policy on support and accessibility

Kristianstad University aims to provide accessibility to premises, studies and examinations for people with disabilities or learning difficulties, such as dyslexia. Our policy on support is based on Sweden's discrimination act (SFS 2008:567) which stipulates that it is prohibited to discriminate against at student or an applicant on basis of disability.

What is a disability? Disability is defined in the Discrimination Act (SFS 20008:567) as a permanent physical, mental or intellectual limitation of a person's functional capacity that as consequence of injury or illness existed at birth, has arisen since then or can be expected to arise.

At Kristianstad University we aim to provide the following types of support

Special arrangements of teaching and examination: You may be allowed a longer examination time or an alternative form of examination, for example an oral instead of a written exam. You will always have to discuss special arrangements of teaching and examination with your programme/course coordinator/examiner and the coordinator for students with diabilities.

Notetaking: If you need help taking notes during lectures please contact the coordinator for further information. We can only hlep you with notetaking if we find a suitable student to take notes.

Sign language interpreter: If you have a hearing defect or are deaf and in need of sign language interpreter, you may get assistance from a sign language interpreter or writing interpreter in your studies. Due to a general lack of interpreters you should contact the coordinator as soon as possible, preferably when you apply to the university.

Accessible media: If you for example are visually disabled or have dyslexia, you can download talking books from MTM free of charge. Please contact the library at biblioteket@hkr.se for further information on accessible media.
