Urban Bath

This project's official home page is here.

Participants from HKR: Niklas Gador

Partners: Sweden Water Research (Coordinator), Lund University, Helsingborg Municipality, Malmö Municipality, NSVA, och VA SYD, Kristianstad University

External funding support: Sweden Water Research

Total Budget: 2 536 000 SEK

Budget for HKR: 150 000 SEK

Project duration: 2020-2022

Project description:

The Swedish summer dream is often about sun, heat and swimming. A good bathing place is therefore important when planning holidays and leisure activities. But what about the quality of our bathing water - and are they affected by our water and sewage facilities? The Urbana Bad project will take a closer look at this.

The project will:

Compare DNA sequences from sediment samples outside water treatment plants and water samples from beaches to investigate whether sediment, with or without E. coli, is present in the water that reaches the beach.
Use DNA sequencing to describe the presence and diversity of cyanobacteria, the bacteria that produce toxins. How can these results be correlated with the results of routine tests to assess connections between the type of cyanobacteria and warnings associated with algal toxins?
Investigate whether the interpretation of flow cytometry data can be developed to predict bathing water quality results in real time.
